Health

4-H bookEver since I started 4-H, I have been enthralled with health and healthy food choices. It’s much more exciting to buy the healthier option than the high-fat foods. In my 4-H book, it recommends we choose low fat milk instead of whole milk. Whole milk, sadly, is my preference and I don’t know if I could live without it. Anyway, there are many things that I’m interested in which would reduce our fat, calorie, and sugars, such as artificial sweeteners. My family, on the other hand, doesn’t believe in substituting things. They believe in abstaining from overindulgence. It’s not Splenda that makes cereal healthy and delicious-it’s the fruit you put on top. As a young child, I’d never fathomed that people would even consider putting sugar on fruit. Even now I think it’s simply ridiculous. And sugar on cereal- absurd! The sugar just dissolves in the milk.

Even though I more actively pursue healthy eating habits, I think my parents are right on, as well. Nutrition is a truly intriguing thing that I think we should all believe in. But, we don’t have to be crazy about it!

Evidentially my parents are right, because even before I became health conscious, we’ve stayed skinny. And have you ever noticed that the people who are nuts about calories are all overweight? Something to think about. Below are the things we do to keep fit.

1. We’re anything but sedentary! We exercise all the time. Taking a walk, doing yoga, snowshoeing and just exercising to an exercise tape is how we stay fit in winter. And who cares if a slim person gains a little weight over the holidays? It will all burn off over the summer. We’re always active during summer-who isn’t?

2. It seems we only drink soft drinks during summer, and occasionally over winter. It’s an extra special treat to drink soft drinks in our family! And what’s sweeter than a treat?

3. If you want to know the truth, I believe I could eat and eat and eat and not become overweight. I don't know why!
